The Indian government has allocated Rs 120 billion for the expansion and modernization of railway infrastructure in the northeastern region of the country. This investment will support the first-ever Bhutan-India railway link, with a 57.5 km railway line connecting Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan. The project is expected to be completed in 2026 and will boost trade, tourism, and bilateral ties between the two nations. This initiative has been in the works since 2005 and is now moving closer to becoming a reality.
