United States rail carload volumes for the week ending September 9 showed a small annual increase of 0.6%, reaching 218,101. Several commodity groups saw gains, including motor vehicles, petroleum products, and coal. However, grain, nonmetallic minerals, and forest products experienced declines. Intermodal containers and trailers fell 3.8% annually to 229,244 units. Overall, US rail traffic in the first 36 weeks of 2023 reported a slight increase in carloads but a significant decrease in intermodal units, resulting in a 4.8% decline in total combined traffic.
